Recently, the China Railway Customer Service Center launched a survey on high-speed rail pet transportation. Reporters noticed that the questionnaire is located within the 12306 system and includes 15 questions about pet ownership, willingness to try high-speed rail pet transportation, pricing standards, and suggestions from non-pet owners. At the same time, the topic of bringing pets on high-speed trains has also sparked heated discussions online.

Most pet owners express a strong need for it. “Not having to find pet boarding services when traveling for business would be much more convenient”. “Being able to travel with cats and dogs would make us very happy’’.

Pet lovers have proposed that designated pet carriages should be established simultaneously, with clear details on requirements and penalties for violations.

Some netizens also expressed their unwillingness, stating that this would be unfriendly to those who fear cats or dogs. If this measure must be implemented, consideration should be given to how to avoid potential conflicts.

On the morning of May 10th, when the reporter called the railway 12306.cn customer service hotline, the relevant operator said that currently, except for guide dogs, no live animals are allowed in high-speed train carriages. However, some pets that meet the requirements can be checked in as cargo. “Will there be pet carriages in the future?” The operator stated that they have not received any new notifications allowing pets on high-speed trains for now. Whether it will be allowed in the future depends on whether the head office issues any relevant notices.

Currently, high-speed trains provide pet transport services for pets that meet the requirements. Except for guide dogs, no live animals are allowed in high-speed train carriages. However, some pets that meet the requirements can undergo cargo check-in procedures.

According to the relevant regulations of the railway department, pets undergoing cargo check-in procedures must meet certain requirements. Fierce beasts and birds of prey that can actively attack and harm humans, such as snakes, scorpions, and centipedes, are not allowed on trains.

Passengers traveling with pets need to complete the pet transport or escort procedures at the station on the day of travel. For distances within 200 kilometers and no feeding required during the journey, escorting is not necessary. If escorting is required, passengers need to purchase tickets for the intended train in advance and complete the escort procedures with the ticket.

The pet transport process involves several steps: Pets are limited to 20 kilograms, and overweight pets cannot undergo cargo check-in. Before departure, passengers need to call to inquire and confirm that intercity luggage transport services (both ends of the journey must have luggage compartments) are available between the departure and destination cities. Additionally, passengers need to provide their own shipping containers, which should be well-ventilated, sturdy, equipped with locking devices, water dispensers, and a bottom liner to prevent animal waste leakage. Passengers also need to obtain an animal quarantine certificate. When applying for the animal quarantine certificate at the animal health and quarantine department, they should bring the pet's immunization certificate, owner's ID card, and other relevant documents.
